The Maya Part 3/3 (Must Comment)

  1. Why did the Spaniards have to come and screw everything up? I mean I understand why they came there but why did they have to turn them into something they didn't want?

  2. The Mayan tactics needed some work, I know their weapons couldn't do much against the Spanish armor, but they knew the land alot better then the spanish did, and they could of used that to their advantage, and over came the Spanish.

  3. The Maya where “No match of muskets and measles”. How sad that their culture was decimated like that by the Spanish. It’s amazing that any part of their religion or rituals is still practiced in any form today.

There were a few things in this video that confused me. The first was when the man said something about the people who believed they were on a turtle's back I wasn't sure who he was talking about. I figured it would be the Mayans since they were the main focus but I don't remember it saying that in any of these videos. The second thing was if Christian rituals are practiced here today how does that connect with the Mayan religion? Wouldn't they be completely different? Overall I thought this documentary was very interesting and gave us a decent but not incredibly detailed idea of what Mayan culture and society was like. I also found it quite thought provoking as the description says because we are just given clues to what Mayan civilization was like so we can make our own theories

  5. I find it interesting that the Spanish came and just slaughtered everyone...that doesn't really seem like a "Christian" thing to do. Today when I think about missionaries, I think of people "trying to save" other people. If that is in fact what they were trying to do then theoretically didn't they do the complete opposite??

  7. If the Mayans had metal weapons like the Spaniards, would that have made a difference of the fight between them? Most likely not. Though the Mayan culture was brutal, it is good to know that the Mayans still exist in this world within the Christian ritual.

  8. I did some research on the myth about the earth on a turtles back and found that the Iroquois believed this too. I also found it interesting that some of the aspects of Mayan religion is still practiced alongside Christianity. I'm glad that some of the Mayan culture lives on.

  9. Its interesting how they had their own book of rules according to their religion just like every religion. I’m always interested in the religion history facts, and where people come from. Everyone has their point of view and we may not look at them and agree with them. It still happens in the world today. I look back at what they did religiously and wonder what they were doing and thinking.

  10. It's good to see that there are still aspects of the Mayan culture that can be found down there to this day. I'm glad that they are only sacrificing chickens and not humans but at least they found some sort of compromise. If you can't beat them join them.

  11. Its really fascinating how all these different cultures that have been overcome with Christianity seem to adopt it and make it their own so to speak.

  12. That's pretty ridiculous. I hate how they the Mayans were attacked when they were weak. Although, this would actually explain a lot. It's good to hear there are still traces of the Mayan culture, but god, I wish the human race would think more, before they wage war.

  13. Well, to be honest I don't blame the Spanish for what they did. If I had encountered a culture like that I would have been motivated to destroy them lest they destroy me (in spite of the Mayan's polite declining of the Christian faith). I do find it fascinating however that once again, the Christians adopted pagan/heathen rituals and claimed them as their own.

  14. it is sad to think that the mayans had to run off and live in the forest if they wanted to live. i know that they would capure ppl and kill them for their gods but thats how many persons over there thought and believed. why do ppl think they can just arrive to a "new land" and take over??? what a bully.

  15. "in the name of peace, we make war" How very christian of them to come and kill or convert.

so wait, some of them were waiting for a prophecy to come true about bearded friends who would tell the way of the "true god" while they were fighting with them? that makes no sense to me.

  16. I did not know that they were already in decline before the Spaniards came. Did they bow to the christian cross because it resembled their tree of life? didn't the spanish come with smallpox? how come the video did not mention it at all? i thought smallpox was a major reason for the fall. -Timothy Mohnhaupt

  17. I didnt think that the Maya were already in decline in civil war, I thought it was all because of encounters with Europeans.

I find that its a good fact that the Mayans were polite to refuse and were saying they shall wait to join the christian face if they felt it; but in the end the conquistadors decided to force it.

  18. The love and kindness of Modern Christianity is fairly recent.

When the spanish came to the Mayans, the Inquistion was in full effect in Europe. You were either Christian, or were killed. Convert or die.

What the spanish saw in the Mayans likely horrified them. A cross, but the bloody and ritual sacrifice likely was seen as a mockery of God. More to the point, there's the convert or die aspect. It was a very unambiguous system.

So, the Spainards sought to bring the Mayans to God and wipe out what they saw as a demon culture.

I suspect that if the Spainards had better disease control or medical science, more of the Mayans would have survived.

  19. It seems the Mayans were so dedicated to the god and probably that was a part of motivation that they created this advanced technology such as architecture and calender. Simply they wanted to do whatever it takes to serve the god, I think.
It's so sad that their history can never be discovored. -Toshikazu Aizawa

  20. It is interesting to see a sneak peak at how the remnants of the Mayan culture adapted to modern society. It seems like they have abandoned everything that has made them bold and distinct within our history books. No more man-slaying and insanely accurate predictions, or playing games with human heads. They have a small little island and are said to be "rooting out", but if that is the case, why do I not see sacrifices?

  21. They Mayan people were already weak when Spain came to them because they had already had many wars between themselves. It was suprising to learn that Spain offered them Christianity before sailing across the water to the Island and slaughtering what was left of the Mayan's. I wonder what happened to the Mayan's that got away back into the forest.

  22. crazy Spaniards! its sad to know that once a great empire was diminished only to a few people practicing remnants of what once was, but even so, it shows you how great they were and how their culture is still embedded in their people of current times.

  23. Those evil old Spaniards practically slaughter the Mayan Empire. The Mayans were a total mismatch to the Spaniards. In result, the Mayans were forced to leave and in 1697 they swam to a forest and became to pray for a prophet to help them.

  24. its funny how even though they were advanced in one aspect, they still fell to a nation that was more "advanced" (weapon-wise at least) than them. its sad to think that they were wiped out after any real contact with the outside world. all the human sacrifices in the world wont save them from other humans.

  25. The Mayans had a very different way of doing things compared to the Spaniards, and it's sad that their weaponry proved insufficient against the Spaniards. But, it's amazing to see these ancient peoples who are so loyal to their religion. Everything is based on pleasing the gods, or trying to please the gods.

  26. This just proves that advance in weaponry and technology would be the victor. Human sacrifices and religion alone did not save the Mayans.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's amazing that even a handful of people can keep the ways of the Mayans alive today, even depressingly so (in comparison with the entire society that was crushed by the Spaniards).

Unfortunately, they were very isolated from other great civilizations. Perhaps if they weren't so wildly different from the Europeans in their practices, a majority of their culture would still be alive.

  28. The Mayan were alreday in a decline before the Spanish ever should up due to so many battle with themselves. The Mayan's didn't have any modern weapons but you would think they would of had some what of the upper hand because they knew the lay of the land. It's just to bad a great civilization had to end the way it did.

  29. it is very sad to know that the weapons of the Spaniards were no match to the weapons of the Mayans. I wonder how things would have turned out if the Mayans agreed to convert to Christianity. -TRISTAN VISITACION

  30. Imagine men making up what gods would require of human sacrifices? And watching those same men start to kill people. I read that when one tribe was captured, the winning tribe sacrificed the whole city of people. Thousands upon thousands of people. I can't take it in how people could talk themselves into doing something like that.

  31. As brutal as the Mayans may have been in their prime, no one can deny how magnificent they were at astronomy and architecture. The Spanish came in with their superior weaponry yes but it says something when even the "more advanced" group is blown away with what the Mayan had built and called home.
One of my best friends went down to Belieze and Guatemala last summer to study Mayan ruins and culture she had many conversations with those who still practice the mayan rituals, she said you couldnt help but feel entranced while listening to what they had to say.

  32. Just a thought, how much people were sacrificed to the Gods? maybe if they still had them, they would have at least put a fight against the spaniards. I mean they were at war, at home. There should have been some sort of advantage right? Anyways, the spaniards picked the right time to invade. The mayans were already declining. I wonder what would have happen if the Mayans converted to Christianity. Maybe things would have changed!

  33. I believe that even thought the Spaniards had stronger weapons and newer technology, if the Maya had it more together and didn't war with each other and weakening themselves, they might have a chance where more might have survived...

  35. I wonder if the Mayans would have been able to fend off the Spaniards if they hadn't been weakened from warring between city-states. Would they have the numbers to fight back or would the Spanish technology and disease still conquer them?

  36. Im glad that they dont practice human sacrfice anymore, but they still have a tiny bit of their culture living on. It's sad that they had to be invaded by the spainards when they were at weak point though. its seems they didnt have much of a chance to protect their homes and their culture.

  37. It's so irritating that the Spanish had to come and ruin such an invigorating, exotic, and completely awing culture. It still irks me to no
    end.

Although, the cutlure isn't completely lost. There are still seeds planted within South America and Central Mexico, and hopefully, those seeds will come into fruitation once again and breath life into the once-brilliant culture again.

It makes me glad I took a Latin America class last quarter, their history is fascinating that I daresay in my opinion, it surpasses a lot of ancient civilizations.

  38. It's amazing to see how relentless spaniards were in converting Mayans to become Christians. It's good to see that still some Mayan traditions along with worship of God's is still in some way preserved today.

  39. Comment by Katherine Carmack:

I thought it was interesting that they decided to trap themselves on an island, probably knowing that the Spaniars would eventually come after them. Wow, they really had alot of faith in the old gods to depend on them to rescue them like that. That would never happen these days, I mean that Americans, would never trap themselves somewhere and pray for their god to come rescue them, most would accept defeat long before that. Even if you are highly spiritual or religous, you pretty much know that god is not going to come and save you from a deserted island.

  40. Yes the Spaniards did come and fight well should I say attack the Mayans, but we do have to remember that the Spaniards were attacking because of how afraid they really were of the unknown world and the people whom live in this unknown world. Many Mayan empires were already in a downfall. Maybe if the Spaniards would have came when the Mayans were at their rise then things would have been different. The disease the Spaniards brought with them didn’t make anything better.

  41. The Spaniards wanted more people to go straight into their religion. However, many resisted and probably ended up dead. Perhaps by 2012, the Mayan will come back from the dead and start going into a zombie invasion.

Of course, we can all play the game of Age of Empires II where the hero (you) lead an army of Aztec warriors (game is historically inaccurate at a certain point) into war against the Spanish.

  42. The spaniords definitely decimated the mayan ranks, but i wonder if they actually killed more mayans then the mayan themselves. Maybe if they mayans did not kill half their people every time an eclipse occured, they would have had enough people to put up a fight. Overall, religion was the end of them.

  43. I had learned previous to this video that the Spanish came to the Mexico region under Cortez and slaughtered the native peoples pretty mercilessly. It still does blow my mind to imagine the process happening. The Mayans (and Mexica) were in a weakened state and the Spanish didn't hesitate to take advantage. They had superior military weaponry (metal swords and shields) and horses to intimidate and attack with. Its interesting to wonder what would have been if the Spanish had not conquered in the way they did. That being said it shows what some religious beliefs can do in decimating a culture.

  44. I honestly think that if the Mayans weren't so into they're religion, they might still exist today. I think that because they were so focused on pleasing the God with wars and human sacrifice, they would probably have more people and it would of lasted way longer then it did. They isolated themselves on an island waiting on a prophecy which could of cause them to not know about the Spaniard coming to attack them. But if the Mayan wasn't devoted to the God, they wouldn't be who they had become and everything would be way different.

  45. It is unfortunate for Mayan culture that they were met by aggressive Spanish exploration in a time when their society was weakened by famine and internal strife. It's sad that they were raped of their culture by something as profoundly stupid as Christianity and Catholicism.
