"Who told you it was a society built over human sacrifice?.. It was a society based on agriculture and astronomy. The fact that these people on this documentary exaggerate on the sacrifices simply shows that these people are speculating on Spanish "accounts" (Most scholars agree that the Spanish exaggerated on the blood sacrifices)." Is this true?
Though playing a game with a human head is pretty intense I'd like to the the loser of that game.
its a disturbing though of how many people the Mayans sacrificed during an eclipse of Venus, I know it was an important planet to them, but I could never imagine that even the Mayan would sacrifice so many because of that.
though the planing the game thing with a head for some reason doesn't surprise me.
They were off by only 14 seconds tracking Venus, without any modern tools or equipment! I find that incredible. I also find it incredible that thousands of people died in ritual sacrifice because of a simple eclipse.
I wonder why, if being sacrificed was an honor, did they have to capture people to have them sacrificed? It seems like there would be plenty of people willing to die for others benefit and their own. I'm interested by the fact that it seems like every single statue or carving has a very specific and important meaning like the place where human hearts were placed being very symbolic all the way down to which way the head of the statue was facing. Although not extremely important I was surprised that a cartoon movie I had once seen depicted a very similar society particularly with the pool of water leading to the underworld and the court where games were played, it seems like the animators did their research.
I was extremely surprised to learn that the "prize" for the winning team of that soccer-like game, was the honor of sacrificing yourself...I'm pretty sure I would make my team lose...every single time. Also I wonder why only young women were thrown down into the water to replay messages to the gods. Did it have anything to do with them possibly being virgins?
I don't think I could ever understand the concept of Human sacrifices. They would play a sort of ball game as sport where they sometimes use a human head to play with. What's more is that the winner of that ball game is offered as sacrifices. How could kill so many people sacrifice so much over a force that they have never personally seen or met?
The underground tomb is kind of creepy and the idea of the earth monster is kind of creepy. I don’t know how I would live in that time. Yet people when they look back at us will probably say the same thing. The building that was build for the site of slaughter is an unbelievable thought. And from the video we watched, and the information saying skeletons were found is unbelievable. The ritual sacrifices are a disturbing thought. The ball field is cool but not the rules and regulations that come along with it.
They captured people to have them sacrificed because it's likely that they didn't want to sacrifice themselves... I mean, would anybody be willing to give up their life when they can easily force another person to do so? It's murder, but murder intended to honor the Gods, which made it acceptable. The sacrifices were disturbing, yes, but there are so many ways of honoring the Gods- whether it be through leaving food as offerings, offering one's own blood (blood-letting), or even offering one's own body and soul- this is yet another way of showing their faithfulness. --Ariel Aronica
The fact that their astrology was so spot on without the use of tools is breathtaking. It's pretty bad that this city was built solely for ritual slaughter and it still ended up falling after all of the blood that was shed there. As for the ball court, that was amazing to see and the fact that they use a human head as a ball at times is a bit extreme, but I guess the human head would be less damaging to their own bodies than a ball of stone or hard rubber.
Its crazy how such a materialistic society as this was able to indulge in so many material and earthly things but then at the same time have such an utter devotion to sacrifice and the "gods" which were unseen and intangible. I really wonder how they found the balance? -inas hyatt
There are a couple of things. The eclipse of Venus, they sacrificed, and had battle? Wow. I mean I know it is important because of all the information they had on it, but like, that's just insane. And also, playing the game with a head.. I find that pretty.. unbelievable.
And I thought he had problems with violence today.. How did anyone in the Mayan Civilization maintain their sanity? They sacrificed 1,000's to win back the light of the sun, human hearts to the lead belly guardian of Chichen Itza, women to the watery gateways of the underworld... And the game with the human head in which with winners were honorably sacrificed? This makes me doubt the concept of natural law.
it is nuts to think that they would through young woman into the water thinking they were sending messages to the underworld. and that little guy with the plate on his belly is so weird and creepy. just think thousands of ppl lost their lives right there.
i love how they show some poorly clipped together seconds trying to make it look like a staircase that goes on forever in Chichen itsa, when you can clearly see the trees magically return to the screen a bunch of times.
also, why do they try and make that temple seem so crazy and scary because it became a place for ritual sacrifice? weren't they ALL?
Shelbalba was a earth monster? i thought it was just the name of the underworld? The eye of God at the crossing of the horizontal and vertical part of the tree of life was cool to learn. i never knew that it sank into the earth. the maya knew that their end was coming? for them to believe that is phenomenal. Why was the arena for the ball game shaped like a capital "I"? Found i cool that the statue that had all the sacrificing on it was facing west. -Timothy Mohnhaupt
Venus is typically the "Morning Star", seen in the skies at dawn, when the sun's light begins to be visible on the horizon. To the Maya, seeing Venus meant that the sun would soon rise. For that reason, the Maya kept an eye on it, because without a herald, the sun might not rise.
The Maya ritual of sacrfice and blood isn't really that surprising. Blood is life, man came from the blood of the Gods, that debt must be repaid.
It is interesting how the film was created. It seems to be a little biased and made to be more interesting, and not as respectful to the basic laws of anthropology as it could be. The ominous tone played when describing their culture and traditions is very disrespectful. Although I do not disagree that playing a game with a human head is indeed crude, they had different standards. However, any decent human being should realize, we have an innate human quality that holds disdain in murder. What happened to theirs?
It is very interesting to me that the Mayan's had a sign that looked extremly close to the Christian Cross, although they had very different meanings. Human Sacrifice was what caught my attention most in this video. Women being sacrificed to the watering wholes and thousands being sacrificed during an eclipse is astonishing. Since I play basketball I found the ball games very intersting as well. When I heard that they sometimes use a human head as a ball I was very disgusted. Also I thought that the losers were sacrificed and was suprised to find out the the the winners were sacrficied and it was looked at as an honor.
I could not in my weirdest dreams imagine winning to be lethal consequence in sport. However, the Chichen Itza ball court operated differently in the sense that they viewed the winners as sacrifices. The game consists of playing with ball that was either made from plaster, stone, and at times they used a human head. The primarily objective was to get the ball through rings that were embedded into the walls of temple.
I know what a ruthless game. If I was playing Chichen Itza ball court game I would focus more on losing than winning. Who knows I would probably score a goal for the posing team making them the winner automatically.
Today, Chichen Itza is mostly recognized for being a place of darkness that has death everywhere.
though i believe the sacrificing was unnecessary, but then again we live in a different place in time. i love the fact that by sacrificing yourself it was considered a great honor. :) i find it amusing how spilling blood to them was a daily part of life, a necessity for life for that matter and now people freak out when they see it. the whole part of throwing women down a well or something of the sort as messengers to the underground was NUTS! all of this happened and it was ok?!
i dont understand why they were so obsessed with the underworld and pleasing the gods there. their civilization was so dark that being sacrificed was an HONOR after WINNING a game... however it is amazing that they were so astronomically advanced, only being off by 14 seconds when tracking venus.
I find it interesting that they could excel at astronomy and create such amazing villages and monuments, while at the same time were intent on killing themselves. But I guess that's my Western point of view.
And those creepy water wells...it looks like the beginning to some bad horror movie remake. Think of all the people who were sacrificed there...it looks so serene but I think that place would give me the major creeps.
It was very interesting that the Mayan were so good at astronomy without any modern technology. I found it strange how many people were sacrificed during the Venus eclipse. Also being sacrificed for winning a game was weird but I guess you don't want to sacrifice a loser to the gods.
It's very intriguing to know and learn of how people were sacrificed such as throwing them into a well for the underworld Gods. I found it very sad that thousands were sacrificed in Chichen Itza for the God Venus. -TRISTAN VISITACION
Hold on, I thought that the losers of the ball game were the ones who were to be sacrificed because they were part of a different tribe? In that instance I'd love to be on the losing end of that game everytime. But then again, if I were alive back then I'd think to dir for the gods was an honor. I find it funny how people freak when they hear of "daily human sacrifices" in the Mayan society. They call them savage and uncivilized without taking the time to step back and process how different their mindset and entire world in general was compared to ours.
First of all, the temples of Palenque and Chichen Itza are just so amazing. But anyways, my question is, why did the mayans believe they owed the Gods blood? It seemed like everything that they believed in dealt with a human sacrifice. I understand their mindset though. You have to do what is neccessary. Lastly, although i love playing sports, I would pass on the sport they played!
So did the Maya and Aztec both have a version of the ball game? If they did, was the only major difference that the Aztecs sacrificed the loser where the Maya would sacrifice the winner? Did the ball and court symbolize the same things? Were there any other major differences? -Clem Carrig
I believe what was really interesting to me how wells were the source of life to the city but at the same time viewed as the gates to the underworld by the Maya. Also how they used young woman as messengers to the underworld by throwing them into the well caught my attention. The ending when they describe the game really surprised me thought because the ball was made of stone and they could only use their body to hit the ball. That must hurt a lot!!
Their bulding and temples are once again amazing! I am schocked with how much human scaraficing they did though during the eclipse! they must have been pretty frightened. i was also so suprised that they would sacrafice the winning team of the ball game and not the losers. they were playing for hope that they would be scaraficed? they seeme to be pretty loyal to their gods no matter what the price.
How interesting that they revered Venus so much, and that they were so concerned with the underworld. It makes me think of all the myths in the past, along with the gods that were also concerned with the underworld and revering certain planets...Perhaps there IS something dwelling beneath our ground? (Ooooh, scary scary food for thought)
Not only that, but it makes me wonder, did the Mayans have underground tunnels that connected to other places? I would love to go into one of those wells to see what it is they saw.
I was amazed that they were able to plot the course of Venus so well and that the planet played a key role to their existence. It's amazing see how all the art work on the buildings can recreate the story of the ball game and how it became an honor to be sacrificed.
I found it very interesting that the Mayans were able to track Venus without any instruments and be so accurate. Also, how they interperted the enomolies in the sky into omens. How did they come up with these meanings. I know they used Halusenagentics, but still, how did they decide that is what the sign from the gods meant? Also, why did they decide that women should be the ones to be sacraficed in the wells to carry messages to the gods. If women were so lowly, why were they chosen? I like how everything has a god, the god of the underworld--Shack, the god of the sun, the weather...very interesting. And how all the gods are very tempermental. Also what is interesting is different civilizations had these ideas of gods for different things, like the Egyptions although the two civilizations were not even in the same time era. Very interesting!
I just don’t understand how the Mayans created such huge monuments and so perfect. To understand why these people had sacrifice is unbelievable to us especially those of us that have no religious beliefs and no real life experience it’s hard even to catch a grasp of what the Mayans lived. The way we live cannot compare to the lives these intelligent people lived every day. Nichole Lerwill
Blood is pretty much the water of life, and because of that, the gods would probably have the will to live in the view point of the Mayans. Yes, life is important and it is probably very important to the Mayans, and that's why they chose to do a ritual sacrifice.
Hell, even their favorite past time involves the game of life and death.
Where did the idea of human sacrifice even come from? why couldn't they just use goats or some sort of other animal? I find it interesting how their laws punish small things severely, but they allow sacrifice.
If people thought sacrifice was so noble, why didn't most of them kill themselves all the time?
The Mayans tracking of the planets and their overall knowledge of astronomy is far ahead of their time. Its fascinating to see that a culture that was left in complete isolation can gain knowledge of a vast subject such as astronomy. Also the human sacrifices are a bit too much for simply pleasing the gods. Although, if it was widely accepted as part of the norm than I suppose I am ok with it too. -Nick Maggipinto
People's head as a ball?! That's disgusting! There must be so much strength needed to play the ball game because they weren't allowed to use their hands and yet the ball was made from stone. It must of been really heavy! Even more interesting, are the "under ground caves" that was suppose to represent Xibalba. I find it absolutely insane that they can go down so far into the earth but somehow everything still holds up and lasted over these years! -amanda vu
It is astounding that they were able to track celestial objects with such accuracy (for that time). It is a shame that intelligent peoples across all cultures and times rely so much on pleasing a god or God when there is obviously no such thing.

Where did the idea of human sacrifice even come from? why couldn't they just use goats or some sort of other animal? I find it interesting how their laws punish small things severely, but they allow sacrifice.
ReplyDeleteIf people thought sacrifice was so noble, why didn't most of them kill themselves all the time?

The Mayans tracking of the planets and their overall knowledge of astronomy is far ahead of their time. Its fascinating to see that a culture that was left in complete isolation can gain knowledge of a vast subject such as astronomy. Also the human sacrifices are a bit too much for simply pleasing the gods. Although, if it was widely accepted as part of the norm than I suppose I am ok with it too.

It is astounding that they were able to track celestial objects with such accuracy (for that time). It is a shame that intelligent peoples across all cultures and times rely so much on pleasing a god or God when there is obviously no such thing.
